In the high mountains of Tibet there is an ancient prophecy. The prophecy predicts a time when life on Earth is in danger, when the future of all life hangs by the frailest of threads, only then will the ancient prophecy of Shambhala emerge... That time is now!

As His Holiness the Dalai Lama noted during the 1985 Kalachakra initiation in Bodhgaya, Shambhala is the name of a secret kingdom hidden in the mysteries of myth and legend. In the Tibetan language, it means “source of happiness”.

The scriptures talk of a time when human civilization degenerates because people are as far removed as possible from community and awareness. These ancient prophecies foretold a time when the earth and all life will be in danger, through greed, ignorance and destruction of the natural world.

It was prophesied that these teachings are taught in order to realize true happiness and will only will be revealed at a time when humanity needs them most, that time is now!

The Kingdom of Shambhala takes a central place in the Kalachakra teachings. Not only did the Buddha teach the Kalachakra tantra at the request of King Suchandra of Shambhala, also the teachings are said to be preserved there. It is predicted that now is the time for a spiritual revival

THE SHAMBHALA PROPHECY

From Joanna Macy

There comes a time when all life on Earth is in danger. Great barbarian powers have arisen (corporations, governments etc). Although these powers spend their wealth in preparations to annihilate one another, they have much in common: weapons of unfathomable destructive power, and technologies that lay waste our world. In this era, when the future of sentient life hangs by the frailest of threads, the kingdom of Shambhala emerges.

You cannot go there, for it is not a place; it is not a geopolitical entity. It exists in the hearts and minds of the Shambhala warriors—that is the term Chogyal Trungpa used, "warriors.”

Nor can you recognize a Shambhala warrior when you see her or him, for they wear no uniforms or insignia, and they carry no banners. They have no barricades on which to climb to threaten the enemy, or behind which they can hide to rest or regroup. They do not even have any home turf. Always they must move on the terrain of the barbarians themselves.

Now the time comes when great courage—moral and physical courage—is required of the Shambhala warriors, for they must go into the very heart of the barbarian power, into the pits and pockets and citadels where the weapons are kept, to dismantle them. To dismantle weapons, in every sense of the word, they must go into the corridors of power where decisions are made.

The Shambhala warriors have the courage to do this because they know that these weapons are manomaya. They are "mind-made." Made by the human mind, they can be unmade by the human mind. The Shambhala warriors know that the dangers threatening life on Earth are not visited upon us by any extraterrestrial power, satanic deities, or preordained evil fate. They arise from our own decisions, our own lifestyles, and our own relationships.

Coming to us across twelve centuries, the prophecy about the coming of the Shambhala warriors illustrates the challenges we face in the Great Turning and the strengths we can bring to it.

The prophecy from Gesar of Ling

The white smoke of juniper rises,
fragrant and dense from the burning coals,
billowing into an empty shining sky,
a vast mirror like expanse,
unclouded by the shadow of fear of birth or death.

Our earth is wounded.
Her oceans and lakes are sick;
her rivers are like running sores;
The air is filled with subtle posions.
And the oily smoke of countless hellish fires blackens the sun.

Fish are born deformed,
birds fall lifeless from the sky,
Animals run in search of food and shelter,
yearning for a taste of compassion.

Men and women, scattered from homeland, family, friends, wander desolate and uncertain, scorched by a toxic sun...
In this desert of frightened, blind uncertainty, some take refuge in the pursuit of power. Some become manipulators of illusion and deceit.

If wisdom and harmony still dwell in this world, as other than a dream lost in an unopened book, they are hidden in our heartbeat.
And it is from our hearts that we cry out.

We cry out and our voices are the single voice of this wounded earth. Our cries are a great wind across the earth."

men have become like zombies,
as they have made their hopes and fears,
into laws,

and the corruption of power,

if goodness and beauty still dwell in this world,
as other than a flickering shadow on the edge of sleep,
if wisdom and harmony still dwell in this world,
as other than a dream in an unopened book,
they are hidden in our heartbeat.

And it is from our hearts,
that we cry out!

we cry out and voices are a single voice,
of this wild beautiful wounded earth,
our cries are a great wind across the sky,
as the juniper smoke rises on the wind.

From the shining purity of the cosmic mirror,
from the fiery wisdom of love and compassion,
from the thunderbolt confidence of enlightened wisdom,
may we be the protectors of this beautiful earth….
